Using the new book, The Green Collar Economy: How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems, as inspiration, Fast Company recently ranked the top 10 jobs in the green sector. It should come as no surprise that six of those jobs, including solar power installer, energy-efficiency builder, and urban planner, can work closely with architects to help green design and sustainable building continue its march to the forefront of the American consciousness.
Those who take jobs in this growing space will not only work on the cusp of innovation and invention, but might also enjoy a second, or side, career as thought leaders once the case studies start to roll in. The AIA has long advocated for the greening of the country – in schools, in the creation of walkable and livable communities and in retrofitting the worst emissions offenders in cities across the nation. We should do everything we can to encourage the next generation of designers and builders to follow the types of green paths that Fast Company lays out. Together, we can create the type of infrastructure that not only sustains the earth, but sustains our industry as well.
