NEW! Texas Law Requires Sustainability CE

As a first in the nation, Governor Perry of Texas recently signed into law a requirement for all architects who hold architecture, interior design, or landscape architect licenses in Texas to complete 1LU hour of continuing education in sustainability annually. At the October 15th meeting in Austin, Texas the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners accepted for consideration the proposed definition from the American Institute of Architects for sustainability.

Sustainability is the concept of meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

To support that outcome, Sustainable Design seeks to avoid depletion of energy, water, and raw material resources; prevent environmental degradation caused by facility and infrastructure development over their life cycle; and create environments that are livable, comfortable, productive, and safe.

The Texas Board of Architectural Examiners will review this definition and will open the debate during public hearings. A final definition will be approved early in 2008 when it is scheduled to go into effect.

NEW! Professional Community Service 2 LU Hour Credits for Members

Effective immediately, AIA members are now permitted to request by self-report, 2 LU hours of continuing education per calendar year for Professional Community Service. The credits are not eligible for HSW.  Professional Community Service includes a member’s volunteer services on committees, boards, and other projects that promote the architectural profession.  Please note that this allowance is for the AIA/CES requirement only.  Check with your state licensing board before submitting these credits for Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE). Please review how to self-report for more information.

CES² Component Scholarship

AIA COMPONENTS PLEASE READ!
2008 AIA Continuing Education Systems AIA Component Scholarship Program, New Orleans, LA.

This past March we were pleased to award 26 AIA Component representatives a $1,000 scholarship to participate in a two day CES program in Tucson, AZ. This scholarship program was intended to help Chapters gain resources; learn to market their continuing education programs, and to learn about CES opportunities that could be made available to them. Because of the amount of positive feedback we received, we are pleased to announce that we will be holding this program again next March 27-28 in New Orleans, LA. We understand many AIA Components struggle with limited resources, staff, and money to conduct quality AIA/CES programs, so the main focus of CES² is how to market your programs effectively. We will also be discussing AIA/CES basics (administration, submitting programs, reporting credit), distance learning programs (developing successful online programs and pod casts), strategic planning/partnerships, and much more! One of the main reasons we can hold a program such as this is due to our sponsors and they too will be in attendance during the entire event as participants, ready to answer your questions and help. This is a great opportunity! To stress how valuable this program was we would like to share some of the testimonies received from those who attended last year:

This program was simply amazing. It answered questions that I did have...and even answered questions that I didn't even know to ask!! It was a powerful learning tool that has really been of enormous benefit for my chapter.
Leslie Nathan, AIA, AIA San Fernando Valley.

The CES² program in Tucson was a great event! It demystified the continuing education process and gave me great ideas that I could take back to my own chapter for different types of events that have been successful for others. I definitely hope to attend another program like this in the future.
Todd Yeomans, AIA Florida Gulf Coast.

I recommend any chapter to apply to send a representative to this program to learn more about what it takes to present quality programs to your members—that they will actually attend. Remember, there is more and more competition from outside organizations for your member’s hard earned continuing education—why not be the “source” that they can depend on to earn their continuing education credits.
Lane Jeter Manis, AIA Jacksonville.

We would like to take this space to again thank our sponsors that made it possible to offer such a successful 2007 CES² Component Scholarship program:  Custom Building Products; LeHigh Cement Company/White Cement Division; Marvin Windows and Doors; Ron Blank & Associates, Inc; Turner Knowledge Network; and U.S. Gypsum, Inc.

There are 25 open slots for the 2008 program. If you are interested in applying for a slot or sponsoring scholarships please email Sara Thomas for an application and more information.
