As noted in the CES Provider Connection, AIA CES has changed the continuing education requirement to include 4 sustainable design hours as part of the total 8 health safety welfare hours. The change in requirement will be effective January 1, 2009. Considering the changes, isn’t time you re-evaluated your learning objectives? When course content is questioned the first place auditors look is at the learning objectives. The Program Registration Form A is being redesigned. Once that becomes available you will be required to re-register any course you want to qualify as Sustainable Design (SD). Prepare now for the evaluation and writing of your learning objectives so that they are compliant with the sustainable design definition and criteria. If you have questions on how to write learning objects, please email Sara Thomas. If you have examples of good sustainable design learning objectives, please post them to this blog.

I suspect this question was answered for me in New Orleans, but I don't trust my memory enough.
Will architects be able to carry over LUs earned in 2008 that qualify for the SD requirement and apply them to 2009 after the new guidelines take effect?
I seem to recall that the answer is "no", and that all changes are effective 1/1/09 with no carryover from 2008. Is that correct?

You are right, Wayne. As the requirement starts January 1, 2009, credits will be tagged as SD starting January 1, 2009. Any SD credits earned previous to that date will be marked as HSW only without a SD designation.

Is ther any grace period.
(ie: the professional's renewal is in February 2009). Will the professional need to obtain the 4 sustainable hours in January 2009? Is the hours requirement pro-rated?

The grace period for AIA CES sustainable design requirement is the same as the grace period for the AIA CES continuing education requirement in general. Members will be required to earn the 4 hours HSW starting in 2009. However, there is a 9-month grace period. Ultimately, all 18 credits for the 2009 requirement, of which 8 are HSW of which 4 of those are sustainable design, will be required by September 30, 2010.

This policy was approved by membership vote as a part of Resolution 08-5 (A Continuing Sustainable Education Agenda) at the 2008 AIA National Convention. The sustainable design (SD) requirement does not begin until January 1, 2009 and will be in place for four (4) years. In 2012 the policy will be reviewed and action reconsidered. Credits earned prior to that time will not be applied as SD. The SD credits will be monitored and audited the same way that we monitor and audit HSW credits.
