Colorado repeals "Continuing Competency" requirements

Colorado repeals "Continuing Competency" requirements (as noted in Denver Architecture Examiner)

With a signature yesterday by Governor Ritter, the short-lived Colorado statute requiring Continuing Competency requirements was repealed.  HB 10-1148, sponsored by Rep. Cheri Gerou, R-Evergreen, generated absolutely no opposition in either chamber.

Proponents of the bill argued that there are continuing education requirements within the industry, particularly with membership to the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The continuing competency requirements set by the state would create a burdensome and largely meaningless process that nearly tripled the cost of license renewal in a time of serious economic troubles for the industry. The statute also jeopardized existing liability insurance policies and the ability to obtain new policies.

Architects, as well as engineers, are already deemed "competent" by the state based on education, experience, and examination prior to receiving their license.

Annual continuing education requirements for state license renewal will still remain in effect.
