Frank Gehry’s Weisman Art Museum is a four-story structure housing approximately 11,000 square feet of gallery space.  A precursor to the architect’s more famous Disney Hall (#99) and Guggenheim Bilbao, the Weisman is made of brushed stainless steel and terra-cotta colored brick.  The building, on the campus of University of Minnesota, is dramatically sited on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

Steve Schafer:

What a truly hideous building!

It's reminiscent of an aluminum can whose label has been stripped off.

It stands out like a sore thumb on the East Bank campus of the Univ of Minnesota.

Inside, there's lots of wasted space that could and should have been better utilized to show more of the collection.

Stephanie:

I think it's great that a university would step out of their standard academic brick style to engage in such a dynamic design. Kudos for boldness and imagination!

Rob Harris:

This was Frank Gehry's first museum in the US, and is a fantastic, contemprory addition to an otherwise traditional campus (and otherwise bleak bank on the Mississippi River). The interior is not nearly as inventive nor as bold as the exterior; perhaps this was done so as not to overshadow the art work displayed. It was recently announced that Gehry was hired to design an addition to the museum, to accommodate, among other things, a restauraunt, and to better integrate the structure with the nearby University campus.

Jill:

Love it or hate it, everyone has a reaction to this building. I think it's spectacular and dramatic and definitely was something the campus needed. Gehry is designing the new addition to the building and I can't wait to see what it will look like. This amazing building brings recognition and reknown to a great university.
