The Gateway Arch was legendary architect Eero Saarinen’s first major commission. Developed with the assistance of structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel, the Arch is constructed of a stainless steel skin covering reinforced concrete nearer the base and carbon steel and rebar higher up. The arch won the AIA’s Twenty-five Year Award in 1990. Saarinen was awarded the Gold Medal posthumously in 1962.

allan macdonald:

There are no comments on this stupid arch because it is just that.

dork diggler:

you're about as stupid as they come, yet I comment about you.

greg:

we love the gateway arch in st louis. it sets us apart from the rest of the country and is just awesome. a real gem

Joe:

The beauty of the arch is its minimal nature. Seeing it in person up-close you get a sense for the scale of it and it is certainly an impressive monument.

I've been to Washington and have seen the majority of the monuments there and I must say that the grandeur of the Arch definitely puts it in a leage above most of the normal "building looking" monuments there...

Rod:

The arch has a timeless quality. It looks as modern today as it did 40 years ago.

It is huge, but still has all this wonderful open space between the legs. So it's both a grand commemoration and a structure that one can love up close.

Think of the St Louis skyline without it. Unthinkable...

Every city should have one.

steve:

Alan,I feel sorry for you.You just don't get it and probably never will. You must be from NY

Liz Murray:

Love the arch. Hard to explain it- but do make the trip up.

allan macdonald:

Dork Diggler's comment was actually rather clever. I wonder why she's afraid to use her real name.

allan macdonald:

It's true I'm from New York. And like most people the world over I have spent most of my life wishing I lived in Missouri.
