The Hotel Del, as it is affectionately known, is one of the last surviving examples of the once-popular wooden Victorian beach resort.  Architect James Reid’s jumble of turrets, gables, and cupolas typified Gilded Age exuberance. Built largely by Chinese and Chinese-American laborers, the hotel is one of the oldest and largest wooden structures in California and one of the biggest resorts on the Pacific Coast of North America.

Wasn't this the Eagles "Hotel California"?

Terry:

Not sure, but it was the home of the conclusion of "Some Like It Hot."

The image on the album cover of "Hotel California" is the Beverly Hills Hotel, in L.A. Whether it was the hotel that actually inspired the song has never been officially verified.

J. Michael Abbott, AIA:

The Del was the location setting for the classic movie "The Stuntman" staring Peter O'Toole and Barbara Hershey from the early eighties. O'Toole earned one of his eight Best Actor Oscar nominations for the film. It is all about filming a movie within the movie--about a World War I flying ace. The Del is in every shot and it never looked better, including parts where they blow it up!

As a San Diegan, it's great to see something local make it into the top 20. The architecture is fabulous by itself, but combine the history and mystique (there is a haunted room, believe it or not) along with the stunning setting on Coronado Island, and you've got a winner!

I was a carpenter on this grand hotel. I helped restore the lobby bar & palm court to its original splender years ago. This will always be one of my proudest experiences.
It is a grand old place.
