The Ahwahnee Hotel was designed by Los Angeles architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood. The building is made of rough-cut granite (the color of the cliffs behind the building) and concrete. What looks like wood siding is actually poured concrete stained the color of pine bark and redwood. The hotel combines stylistic elements of the Art Deco and Arts and Craft movements.

Overpriced hotel, I don't think it merits being the 26th on this list.

This is an absolutely stunning hotel that fits in beautifully with its surroundings. I'm glad to see it so high on the list - it's truly breathtaking.

Mike, the Ahwanee Hotel merits being 26th on this list simply because it was the 26th most common answer by the people polled as to what their favorite building was. For most people, their facsination with this building is probably based on its beautiful Arts and Crafts styling and how well it fits into the natural landscape of Yosemite. Pricing has nothing to do with it. In fact, the pricing is probably so high due partly to the fact that it is such a popular and beloved building (and destination). The more people that love the building and want to stay there, the more the hotel can charge for its rooms. Simple supply and demand.
