In last week's AIArchitect, not only did we see a new fancy format, but there was also a new column on Emerging Professionals. Did you notice it? This month, the YAF contributed an article about sustainability and the influence that today's generation can have on our environment through green design. Mark Giessen, a project manager with Cubellis Ecoplan, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., says:
"I firmly believe that one day all design will be environmentally conscious design. The generations before us laid the foundations of sustainable design, and it is the responsibility of the young professionals to take charge and guarantee that our profession remains in the forefront of the environmental movement. When we look back, sustainable design may be what defines this generation of architects. I look forward to being a part of it."

Mark is, as most sane people would agree, dead on with his assessments. How that charge - to 'guarantee that our profession remains in the forefront of the environmental movement' - is translated into the working methods and cultures of most firms will be interesting to watch develop. I suspect some firms have a genuine commitment to exploring how we make buildings more ecological in their focus and that some firms are simply 'greenwashing' a tired product and way of working.
Wilfried Wang several years ago wrote an article 'Sustainability is a Cultural Problem'(article here) which makes an astute observation that getting people to think ecologically is less a technical issue than it is making people and clients aware of it's importance. That aspect may be, truly, our great mission of the next 20 years.

I completely agree with both posts. The development of a work and design ethic that parallels a committed focus to our impact on the environment is imperative.
I have the greatest of hope in the potential of our generation to learn from the egocentric actions witnessed in the early 80's (prosperity blinding ethical responsibility). Firms should be taking a long hard look at the reasons "why" and should be committed for the long run to ensure that our environment remains a focus, not just a marketing trend or a product only solution.

"When we look back, sustainable design may be what defines this generation of architects"
I disagree with this statement. I believe that all professions Lawyers, Architects, Mayors, and Designers
will change the way on the ground to make it more democratic for a citizen to engage in a sustainable society. I see in order for a generation or profession to claim “ sustainability ” all professions must work together in a more interdisciplinary role.
Every profession, has to work together in a more integrated approach
and it is the responsibility of the young professionals to take charge and guarantee that our profession remains in the forefront of the environmental movement.
i agree and disagree with this statement. Yes it is the responsibility of young professionals to take charge
however, i'am not seeing this.......I understand that in this is a profit driven industry. Influenced by owners.
For instance , the concept of gated communities ... some say that its is a better life , trees, a nice place to live..which i disagree . . however why are these planned communities still being built in the bay area and all of California and which is always approved by architects.
Factoid In south Africa apartheid system gated communities were used to separate blacks and whites. these communities condemns the poor to work far away. IN THE UNITED STATES IT IS USED TO SEPERATE THE AFFLENT AND MIDDLE CLASS FROM THE POOR. one of the goals of sustainable design is social integration not social segregation In my opinion,
The only statement that i agree with is that “The generations before us laid the foundations of sustainable design”
i recall,a visionary and advocate for sustainable communities,Jane Jacobs. Her book “The death and life of American cities” said that communities will prosper and environment will prosper if small industry, local labor , local material, local transport can be found in close proximities and the framework of each neighborhood given the opportunity. the role of government is to provide health care, goods and services, education etc. I live now in Daly city and San Francisco
I quote Joseph Ackerman deutsche bank...
“Toward the end of this century 2/3 of the world's population will be living in cities many predict cities could become important than nation states. After the era of globalization we will be entering the urban age”
balancing our communities is a group effort, by lawmakers, architects, landscape planners, philosophers, mayors, contractors, and owners and everyone no matter what field...ooh wait except the insurance industry....
ciao

Our Company works mainly in South Orange County Ca. Every Major remodel we do Iam sickened and saddened by all the perfectly reusable material that ends up in the trash heap. We are looking for an architect to work with who truly believes in recycling building products and mixing them with visually exciting finishes. Iwould love to hear from someone who is of a similar mind set.Marty Dejongh

The total amount is about US§ (9 000 000) Nine Million Dollars, i want to carry it out through diplomatic baggage but i have to get in touch with someone in your country.I believe you can assist me by accepting to receive the money with you in your country since i'm not on business trip to your country, i can not carry much money on me, it's suspicious especially as a foreigner in the country where i live, the law here does not permit me to do transaction of such huge amount of money, so that's why i'm appealing to you to assist me by receiving the money on my behalf in your country.I intend to send my childern to school with part of the money.
